It’s the Playoffs!!

It is truly an exciting time of the year for Mercyhurst…commencement is just days away, the campus has never looked better, and it is the playoff season for a few of our spring sports teams! Over the next couple weeks three of our teams will partake in the NCAA Playoffs, representing quite an achievement just to qualify for the postseason tournaments.

The baseball team is up first, taking to the field tonight (Thursday) as the No. 4 seed in the Atlantic Region playoffs. This is the second straight year the Lakers qualified for postseason play, and last the team was just one step away from the College World Series. The team plays No. 3 Kutztown Thursday to open the double-elimination tournament. The event is played from May 17-21, and regional champions will advance to the double-elimination championship finals May 26 through June 2. Follow our Facebook page and the Hurst Athletics website for more details!

This weekend the No. 1-ranked mens lacrosse team hosts No. 4 Dowling in a NCAA semifinal. The face-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Tullio Field, with tickets being sold for $10 for adults and $5 for student/seniors. Mercyhurst is the defending NCAA Champion, and has completed the 2012 regular season undefeated despite having a big target on their back. Dowling enters the contest 11-2, with one of their losses coming earlier in the year to Mercyhurst. The Lakers will look to extend their unbeaten streak to 21 games dating back to last year and as a result return to the NCAA Championship game. That game will be held Sunday, May 27, in Boston, Mass. You can learn more on Hurst Athletics and stay tuned to our Facebook page for some updates!

Last but certainly not least, the women’s rowing will seek to continue their string of postseason success when they travel to West Windsor, N.J., to compete as one of four teams in the NCAA Championships. This is the team’s second straight invite and third in the last four years. The team won a National Championship in 2004, and the varsity eight boat won the national championship in 2010. Stay tuned to Hurst Athletics and our Facebook page for updates from NJ!

All in all, should be a good few weeks for Mercyhurst University. GO LAKERS!

Road Trip: Cincinnati

Last night we had a great turnout for our first alumni event in Cincinnati, Ohio! We gathered just north of downtown at The Pub at Rookwood. It was a beautiful, sunny day and we were lucky enough to be able to mingle and enjoy food and drink outside on their gorgeous patio. We were so excited to see the faces of a few alums we had only connected with via phone or email, as well as catch up with an alumna who we had not seen since Reunion Weekend last year. It was great to learn about what our alumni are doing in the Cincinnati area and we will definitely be back!

A wide range of our alums joined us last night ranging from the class of 1961 to 2007. One alumna was a former Rockette! On a more romantic note, we learned that four of the couples in attendance had met at Mercyhurst! What great stories to hear.

Tonight we will be in Columbus, Ohio at the Brazenhead Irish Pub. We are looking forward to catching up with our alumni in town!

As always, be sure to check us out on Facebook and follow us on Twitter @HurstAlumni!

Carpe Diem!

Road Trip: Cleveland
Cleveland Alumni

Mercyhurst alumni in Cleveland just couldn't wait to put on their new Mercyhurst University t-shirts!

(Well…I’m slacking. The event in Cleveland was last Thursday, but didn’t get to write this until this morning (Monday). I hope you’ll forgive me!)

We had another great turnout for our University Road Trip, this time being alumni and prospective students in Cleveland, Ohio. Over 50 people gathered at the Corner Alley downtown for some food, drinks, and even a little bit of bowling! It was a great opportunity for alumni of all ages – ranging from 1957 to 2011 – to meet and mingle with each other and some of the newest batch of Mercyhurst Lakers set to descend on campus this fall.

During our alumni events it is always interesting to see who comes to the event. Almost always there are a handful of regulars, alums who show up each time we come to town, and we love them! But more and more we see new faces — folks who have never been to an event and came out to see what it’s like. In almost every instance like that, they go away happy they came and look forward to the next event. At the event in Cleveland we had many folks in that second category, so we very much look forward to returning this fall for our next event!

As always, check out our Facebook page for some photos, and follow us on Twitter @HurstAlumni!

This week we’re heading back to the Buckeye state for events in Cincinnati and Columbus on Wednesday and Thursday respectively. Also on the horizon are events in Ann Arbor and Philadelphia, crazy to think how fast time is flying!

Road Trip: Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh Alumni

Mercyhurst alumni from the 2000's gather at last night's event in Pittsburgh.

Last night a few members of the alumni relations staff made the trek down I-79 and hosted an event in downtown Pittsburgh for alumni and prospective students in the Pittsburgh area. The event was held at Jerome Bettis Grille 36, a local favorite establishment which served as a perfect venue. Little did we know when we selected the location two months ago that the very night we host an event the Pittsburgh Penguins would be hosting a first-round playoff game! Needless to say, the fact that the venue had many TVs was a definite bonus we never originally considered!

The event was well-attended and boasted a wide variety of years and academic programs represented by alumni. There were several alumni from the 1960′s, and yet quite a few from the 2000′s! In addition, we also welcomed a dozen prospective students who are contemplating enrollment at Mercyhurst this fall. We hope some good food and drink coupled with one-on-one time with our spectacular admissions counselors helped seal the deal last night. Also in attendance were two members of our Alumni Association Board of Directors: Mary McKenna ’90 and Ryan Kennis ’99.

In just a little bit we’re heading back on the highway, this time westward to Cleveland, Ohio. We’re gathering at the Corner Alley in downtown, and again expect a great mix of class years and look forward to another dozen or so prospective students that we hope will make the right choice for school this fall!

Many thanks to all who are coming out to see us! Be sure to check out our Facebook page for photos, and follow us on Twitter for more updates!

Here We Go Again…

Our staff has taken advantage of the holiday weekend and rested up after a couple of busy weeks on the road. That period of rest is just about over, however, as the University Road Trip heads back on the road tomorrow! On Wednesday evening we will be gathering with over 100 alumni, prospective students, and guests at the Jerome Bettis Grille 36 in downtown Pittsburgh (event page here). Flipping the calendar a page, we will be heading to Cleveland on Thursday for an event at the Corner Alley, again filled with alumni and prospective students (event page here). We’re excited to meet new people, see old friends, and share the exciting updates coming from the ‘Hurst!

Kimball Brothers Headline NCAA Website

During this, the week before the Final Four, the NCAA found it worthy to highlight the Kimball brothers – two of whom are current Mercyhurst student athletes – on the front page of their website. You can see the image below, and read the story here. The brothers – Connor, Bryant, and Colin – are sons of Mercyhurst Athletic Director Joe Kimball, and the latter two have starred on the football field for Mercyhurst. It is an impressive story of a passion for sports and an equal love of music.

Giving Back…

Some of the volunteers from Saturday's service project at the Multicultural Community Resource Center (MCRC) in Erie.

In honor of the Mercy Month celebration taking place on the Mercyhurst University campuses, the alumni relations team worked with the service learning office to host a Mercyhurst community service project this past Saturday. Mercyhurst students, alumni, and employees gathered at the Multicultural Community Resource Center (MCRC), a local non-profit helping refugees settle in to Erie, with the clean-up of a building they have recently acquired. It was a great opportunity to provide dozens of free labor hours for this organization, helping to provide a clean and functional facility to help expand their reach throughout Erie’s growing refugee population. Check out our Facebook page for a few photos from the event.

There were also service projects held in Washington D.C. and New York City this month, a great opportunity for alumni in these areas to get together, network with each other, and make a great contribution to worthwhile organizations in the process.

We hope this is the first of annual service events in conjunction with Mercy Month. Watch your email and the website for more details as we look forward toward next year’s event!

Road Trip: Rochester

The Next Door Bar & Grill was happy to host Mercyhurst!

Throughout this road trip, we’ve been impressed by the turnouts we’ve seen. Last night’s event in Rochester (Pitsford to be exact), was by far among the best. We’ve had some great events in Rochester over the years, but this was at a different level. The conversations had by Mercyhurst alumni spanned generations, geographic regions, and were thrilling to be a part of! The food and drink provided by the Next Door Bar & Grill (owned by Wegman’s) was absolutely terrific.

This event also featured about 20 prospective students, many of whom hung out together and were spotted with their cell phones out presumably connecting to one another via a particular social networking website. We  received great feedback from parents who were thrilled to meet some of the Admissions staff, and enjoyed having their children meet fellow students headed for the ‘Hurst in the fall.

Once again, a terrific time had by all. Be sure to check out our Facebook page for some photos from the event. We’re getting ready to make the short drive over to Buffalo for tonight’s event there. We’re hosting alumni and prospective students once again, and we’re looking forward to a great event.

Road Trip: Syracuse

After a beautiful weekend off, celebrating our Mercyhurst Irish heritage, we were back on the road Tuesday morning heading to Syracuse. While we have traveled to multiple cities for alumni events before, this is our first road trip and it has definitely presented many fun experiences, and also learning opportunities- for example we have mastered packing and fitting more people into a car than should be allowed, and child lock in the backseat is incredibly frustrating as an adult in your mid-twenties! We have seen many interesting cities and it has been a lot of fun hearing about what our alumni have been doing and getting a glimpse of their post-Hurst lives.

We held an intimate event at Coleman’s pub Tuesday night, with alumni ranging from the class of 1957 to 2008. Our alumni are doing great things in Syracuse from raising families, working in education, and working with teenagers who are in foster care or recently adopted. They are also continuing to take part in activities they enjoyed at Mercyhurst such as theater. We heard great stories from a 1978 grad who walked with a group of friends from Erie to Ashtabula, Ohio and back, as well as a 1957 grad who transferred to Mercyhurst and then had the opportunity to travel to ten European countries after she graduated. We definitely are looking forward to returning to Syracuse next year!

We’ve packed our bags and our on our way to Rochester where we will meet up with the admissions team for an event with alumni and accepted students tonight at Next Door Bar & Grill. We are anticipating a great crowd and great food! As Wegman’s self proclaimed biggest fan, I am ecstatic about heading to the home of Wegman’s flagship store and hosting our event at their restaurant.
